Avengers: Age of Ultron – Rivoli Ballroom
In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the Avengers track down arms dealer Ulysses Klaue in South Africa, leading to a tense confrontation inside his industrial cargo vessel.
While the scene is set aboard a ship in Johannesburg, parts of the interior were filmed inside the richly decorated Rivoli Ballroom in London. The contrast is deliciously cinematic. A glamorous 1950s dance hall quietly transforms into a gritty black-market meeting point filled with vibranium negotiations, rising tempers, and the first explosive clash between Hulk and Iron Man.
This sequence is crucial. It deepens Ultron’s threat, introduces Klaue as a key player in the vibranium trade, and triggers the chain of events that spirals into the Hulkbuster battle.
The real filming location
The interior scenes were filmed at the Rivoli Ballroom, located in Brockley, South East London.
The Rivoli Ballroom is one of the last remaining intact 1950s ballrooms in London. Known for its red velvet interiors, chandeliers, mirrored walls, and vintage décor, it usually hosts dances, live music, and private events.
For the film, sections of the ballroom were adapted and redressed to serve as interior spaces within Klaue’s ship. Production design carefully altered the look, toning down the overt glamour while keeping the structure and layout as the physical foundation.
Why this location was chosen
Marvel’s UK-based production often blended unexpected real-world interiors with heavy set dressing and CGI.
The Rivoli Ballroom offered:
Large open interior space suitable for stunt choreography
Architectural detail that could be transformed creatively
Controlled filming conditions in a practical London location
Its adaptable interior allowed designers to build industrial elements within an existing structure, saving construction time while preserving physical authenticity for the actors.
Visiting the location today
The Rivoli Ballroom is still fully operational as an event venue and remains one of London’s most distinctive historic dance halls.
Visitors can attend public dance nights, concerts, or private events. However, there are no permanent references to Avengers: Age of Ultron inside the venue, as the cinematic transformation was temporary.
Standing inside today, it feels worlds away from a vibranium arms deal, which makes the movie magic even more impressive.
