Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets – Glenfinnan Viaduct
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), the dramatic flying car sequence unfolds around the Glenfinnan Viaduct. After Dobby blocks their access to Platform 9¾, Harry and Ron commandeer the enchanted Ford Anglia. As they struggle to catch the Hogwarts Express, the car careens across the iconic viaduct, darting in and out of its arches in a breathtaking cinematic moment.
Behind the Scenes – Filming Curiosities
- The Glenfinnan Viaduct, located approximately 20 miles west of Fort William, was chosen to anchor this thrilling scene, though filming in such a remote and dramatic landscape presented logistical challenges.
- The image of the flying car circling around the curved viaduct has become one of the most memorable and frequently referenced sequences in the entire Harry Potter film legacy.
About the Location – Architecture & Local Highlights
- The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a civil engineering landmark—constructed between 1897 and 1901 by Robert McAlpine & Sons, it’s made of mass concrete and spans 381 meters (416 yards) with 21 semicircular arches, each stretching approximately 50 feet.
- Rising 30 meters (100 feet) above the River Finnan, it is the longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland, carrying the single-track West Highland Line.
- It’s one of Scotland’s most picturesque landmarks, elevated further by its association with the Hogwarts Express (the Jacobite steam train) and film tourism.
