El Cid – Battle of Calahorra

The historical epic El Cid, directed by Anthony Mann and starring Charlton Heston (Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar) and Sophia Loren (Doña Jimena), tells the story of the legendary Castilian knight, a hero of the Reconquista, whose epic struggle for the city of Calahorra reflects his unwavering devotion to honor and service to the Christian kingdoms.

Scene Filmed at Belmonte Castle

In 1961, the late Gothic palace-fortress of Belmonte, in the province of Cuenca, served as the dramatic backdrop for the legendary Battle of Calahorra, where El Cid faces the swordsman of King Ramiro of Aragon. The scene, filmed over five days with intense fight choreography, left Heston and Christopher Rhodes with real bruises and injuries, a testament to the production’s commitment to authenticity.

Another sequence — the tournament scene — was shot on the large esplanade in front of the castle, using the fortress as a striking background. Many extras were local residents from Belmonte and nearby towns, such as Quintanar de la Orden.

About Belmonte Castle and How to Visit

Belmonte Castle (15th century), built on the hill of San Cristóbal by Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, is one of the most exceptional examples of Gothic-Mudéjar architecture in Spain. Declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931 and a Cultural Heritage Site, it underwent restoration in the 19th century under the patronage of Empress Eugénie de Montijo.

Today, visitors can explore its parade ground, the keep, battlements, and enjoy panoramic views of the town and its monuments from the castle’s ramparts.

Belmonte Castle was not only a witness to the grand cinematic recreation of El Cid, but remains a living heritage landmark — a perfect destination for film lovers, history enthusiasts, and admirers of medieval architecture.
