El Cid – The Conquest of Valencia

The epic historical film El Cid, directed by Anthony Mann and starring Charlton Heston (Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar) and Sophia Loren (Doña Jimena), portrays the legendary Castilian knight’s exploits during the Reconquista—with his defense of Calahorra becoming a symbol of honor and duty to the Christian kingdoms.

Scene Filmed at Peñíscola

Between December 1960 and February 1961, Peñíscola transformed into a cinematic stage for El Cid—featured as the walled city of Valencia.

A massive set was constructed using plaster, paint, and wood to disguise modern elements, making the medieval fortress appear authentic. This grand production even earned a mention in the Guinness Book of Records.

Over 5,000 extras participated—remarkably high for a town of roughly 2,500 inhabitants—and included local residents and more than 2,000 soldiers arriving with horses from Madrid. Entire families took part, offering not only their time but also lodging, boats, and animals, earning generously for that time.

About Peñíscola Castle and Visiting Today

Perched on a rocky peninsula, Peñíscola Castle is a medieval fortress originally built by the Knights Templar in 1307, later occupied by Antipope Benedict XIII (Papa Luna).

Its ramparts and town walls stood in for Valencia in El Cid, highlighted as dramatically authentic due to the production’s alterations and additions—walls were added to the structure for visual effect that surpasses archaeological accuracy.

Visitors today can explore the castle’s courtyard, Templar-era chambers, and breathtaking panoramic views from its battlements. The old town’s narrow streets, beaches, and coastline further enrich its cinematic legacy.

Peñíscola played a pivotal role in El Cid‘s production, forever linking this historic castle-town to Hollywood’s golden era. Today it stands as both a piece of film heritage and a living monument to medieval culture—and is a must-visit for fans of history, architecture, and cinema.
