Scene in the series
In Stranger Things (Season 1 and Season 3, released in 2016 and 2019), Bradley’s Big Buy is the local grocery store where several key moments unfold. Most memorably, it is the place where Eleven steals Eggo waffles shortly after arriving in Hawkins, establishing both her hunger and her growing independence outside the laboratory. The scene is brief but iconic, turning a simple supermarket run into a defining character moment that would become a recurring visual motif throughout the series.
The store reappears in Season 3, when the group uses it as a convenient stop to gather supplies. By this point in the story, Hawkins feels more lived-in and familiar, and Bradley’s Big Buy functions as part of the town’s everyday fabric. Its presence reinforces the contrast between ordinary suburban life and the increasingly dangerous events unfolding beneath the surface.
The real location
Bradley’s Big Buy was filmed at a former Piggly Wiggly supermarket located in Palmetto, Georgia, a small town southwest of Atlanta. The building’s classic grocery store layout, large parking lot, and straightforward exterior made it an ideal stand-in for a Midwestern small-town supermarket from the 1980s.
The store was no longer operating at the time of filming, which allowed the production team to fully redesign the interior and exterior signage to match the fictional Hawkins brand. Its unassuming architecture and neutral design helped sell the illusion of a typical American grocery store without drawing attention away from the characters.
Why this location was chosen
The Stranger Things production consistently favored real, everyday locations that audiences would instantly recognize. A former Piggly Wiggly offered exactly that: a familiar grocery chain building that required minimal structural changes to evoke the 1980s. With careful set dressing, period-accurate products, and signage, the location became a convincing snapshot of small-town retail life.
From a logistical perspective, using an empty supermarket provided complete control over filming schedules, lighting, and blocking. The location’s proximity to other Hawkins-area sets also made it efficient to integrate into both early and later seasons of the show.
Visiting the location
The building used as Bradley’s Big Buy is a private property and is not operated as a Stranger Things attraction. Visitors can view the exterior from public areas, but interior access is not available. The appearance of the building may differ from what is seen on screen, as the Hawkins branding was temporary for filming.
For fans exploring Stranger Things locations in Georgia, this stop works well as a quick exterior visit. As always, visitors should respect private property and avoid trespassing.
