Stranger Things – StarCourt Mall

Filming Location in United States

Stranger Things’ Starcourt Mall served as a vibrant centerpiece in Season 3, embodying the bustling retail heart of fictional Hawkins, Indiana, during the summer of 1985. This sprawling shopping complex housed key stores like the fictional Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor, where characters Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley slung scoops amid teenage antics and budding romance. The mall’s gleaming atriums, escalators, and storefronts captured the era’s consumerist optimism, complete with a food court, movie theater facade, and kiosks evoking mid-1980s mall culture. Iconic spots included approximations of Gap and Glamour Shots studios, blending real retail nostalgia with show-specific inventions. Its dramatic arc—from everyday hangout to fiery finale—made it indispensable to the season’s plot, drawing fans to trace its real-world roots.

The Scene

In Season 3 of Stranger Things, Starcourt Mall pulses with 1980s energy as the primary social hub for Hawkins’ youth. Steve and Robin take jobs at Scoops Ahoy, navigating flirtations, Russian code-breaking, and shady mall rats while scooping New Mexican flavors. The food court buzzes with families and friends, while escalators and atriums host chases and revelations. Tensions escalate when the group uncovers a secret Russian base beneath the mall, leading to explosive battles with the Mind Flayer. Fire engulfs the structure in the finale, symbolizing the season’s clash between nostalgia and supernatural terror. These scenes masterfully blend humor, suspense, and spectacle, using the mall’s architecture for dynamic wide shots and intimate character moments.

The Real Filming Location

The real filming location for Starcourt Mall is Gwinnett Place Mall, situated at 2100 Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta (coordinates approximately 33.960965, -84.125647). This once-thriving 1980s shopping center, with its soaring atrium, vaulted geometric ceilings, and two-story open design, perfectly mirrored the show’s retro aesthetic despite later decline. Production transformed the food court area, stripping ’90s carpeting and repainting to revive its angular ’80s architecture. Storefronts like Scoops Ahoy were built from scratch, alongside facades for a movie theater and kiosks. Filming occurred throughout Season 3, capturing exteriors and interiors before the mall’s full closure.

Why This Location Was Chosen

Production designer Chris Trujillo scouted Atlanta suburbs for weeks, seeking an affordable existing space over building from scratch. Gwinnett Place Mall stood out for its “faded retro stylings,” evoking a barely-visited ’80s relic ideal for Hawkins. The food court’s vast atrium offered “echoes of an incredibly ’80s showpiece,” with high ceilings and open layout suiting the Duffer Brothers’ dynamic camerawork. About 80 crew members worked for six weeks to dress it, selecting 1985-appropriate stores like Gap to ground the fictional Indiana mall. Its suburban authenticity and period echoes made it a cost-effective, visually perfect match, avoiding the expense of full set construction.

Visiting the Location

Gwinnett Place Mall has been closed since around 2019, with much of the site now restricted or in redevelopment phases, limiting access to former Starcourt areas. Exterior views from Pleasant Hill Road still allow photos of the structure, identifiable by its distinctive architecture. Fans have snuck peeks at blocked entrances, spotting remnants like old Disney Store spaces and Scoops Ahoy’s approximate spot behind escalators, though interiors are off-limits. Demolition has been anticipated, so check local updates before planning a trip. Nearby Atlanta offers other Stranger Things sites like Emory University’s Briarcliff for Hawkins Lab. Visit during daylight for safety, respecting no-trespassing signs amid the abandoned vibe.
