Scene in the series
Surfer Boy Pizza appears in Stranger Things Season 4 (2022) as one of the main locations in the California storyline. The pizza restaurant is where Argyle works and where Eleven, Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle regroup after fleeing Lenora Hills.
One of the most important scenes set here is when the group prepares a makeshift sensory deprivation bath for Eleven inside the restaurant. Using salt, water, and a freezer filled with ice, they attempt to help Eleven regain and strengthen her powers in order to contact Max, who is under threat from Vecna back in Hawkins.
The scene blends urgency with the show’s signature offbeat humor, contrasting the absurdity of building a psychic tank in a pizza kitchen with the very real danger facing their friends. Surfer Boy Pizza becomes a temporary sanctuary, but also a place of desperation, highlighting how far the characters are willing to go to save each other.
The real location
Surfer Boy Pizza was filmed at Aliberto’s Mexican Food, a real fast-food restaurant located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The building was extensively re-dressed for the series, transforming its exterior and interior into the brightly colored, surfer-themed pizza chain seen on screen.
Aliberto’s Mexican Food is a modest roadside eatery with a simple structure, making it an ideal blank canvas for production designers. The location’s layout allowed the crew to film both kitchen and dining area scenes while accommodating equipment and stunt setups.
Unlike most Stranger Things locations, which are filmed in Georgia, this site reflects the show’s expansion into New Mexico settings during Season 4.
Why this location was chosen
From a visual standpoint, the building’s straightforward design made it easy to fully transform into a fictional pizza franchise without heavy digital effects. The exaggerated colors and branding of Surfer Boy Pizza support the California road-trip tone of this part of the season.
Logistically, Albuquerque offers film-friendly infrastructure and tax incentives, making it a practical choice for extended filming outside Georgia. The restaurant’s standalone position also allowed for controlled shoots without heavy pedestrian traffic.
Narratively, the contrast between a casual fast-food restaurant and a life-or-death psychic experiment reinforces the show’s core theme: extraordinary events unfolding in the most ordinary places.
Visiting the location
Aliberto’s Mexican Food is a real, operating restaurant and remains open to the public. Visitors can view the exterior, which is easily recognizable despite the removal of Surfer Boy Pizza set dressing.
As it is a working business, visitors should be respectful, avoid blocking entrances, and limit photography inside unless permission is granted. There are no permanent Stranger Things signs at the location.
This is one of the most accessible Season 4 filming locations for fans visiting Albuquerque.
