One of Bodiam Castle’s most striking features is its wide moat, which completely surrounds the structure and gives it the appearance of a perfectly preserved fortress when viewed from the outside. Step inside, however, and the illusion changes. The interior reveals atmospheric ruins: crumbling walls, partial fireplaces, incomplete turrets, and doorways that now lead nowhere.
Visitors can also spot protection marks, historical symbols carved into the stone that were believed to guard inhabitants from evil spirits, adding an extra layer of mystique to the site.
