Wonka – Wonka’s Bath City

In Wonka (2023), director Paul King reimagines the origins of Willy Wonka through a vibrant, storybook city that feels both familiar and fantastical. One of the film’s most striking sequences transforms the historic city of Bath into a magical winter wonderland, complete with swirling snow, festive crowds, and pastel-toned architecture. These scenes establish the fairytale atmosphere of Wonka’s world, presenting the city as a place of possibility, invention, and a little delicious chaos.

The Real Location: Bath Turned Into a Winter Wonderland

In October 2021, Bath was dramatically transformed for filming. Snow machines blanketed the streets, while fake snow was carefully applied to the city’s iconic Georgian colonnades, temporarily turning this UNESCO World Heritage Site into a cinematic winter city. Despite being filmed in autumn, the illusion of mid-winter was so convincing that passers-by described Bath as looking like a Christmas postcard come to life.

Key filming locations included:

  • Parade Gardens, overlooking the River Avon
  • Bath Abbey, one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks
  • Orange Grove, used for bustling street scenes

These locations collectively formed what fans now refer to as “Wonka’s Bath City.”

Why Bath Was the Perfect Choice

Bath’s harmonious architecture, warm stone façades, and elegant public spaces naturally lend themselves to a whimsical, old-world aesthetic. For Wonka, the city provided a ready-made fantasy backdrop that required enhancement rather than reinvention. The combination of real historical spaces and carefully controlled visual effects helped ground the film’s magical tone in a believable, tactile environment.

About the Filming Locations

  • Parade Gardens: Often featured in period dramas, here it became part of Wonka’s lively city streets.
  • Bath Abbey: Its Gothic presence added grandeur and scale to crowd scenes.
  • Orange Grove: A central pedestrian area, ideal for choreographed movement and bustling extras.

These locations remain largely unchanged today, allowing visitors to easily retrace Wonka’s footsteps.
