Wonka – Merton Street

Filming Location in United Kingdom

In Wonka (2023), several street scenes capture the early chapters of Willy Wonka’s journey, showing him navigating a whimsical yet slightly austere city that feels suspended in time. One memorable sequence features fake snow falling softly over cobblestones, while 1940s-era vehicles pass through the frame. These moments help ground the story in a nostalgic, storybook version of Europe, blending post-war aesthetics with Roald Dahl–style fantasy.

These scenes reinforce the film’s tone: a world that looks historical and real, yet is clearly being nudged toward magic.

The Real Location: Merton Street, Oxford

The scenes were filmed on Merton Street, a historic road in Oxford, running alongside the outer walls of Merton College, one of the city’s oldest colleges, founded in 1264. For filming, the street was transformed with artificial snow, vintage props, and carefully placed period vehicles to evoke a mid-20th-century atmosphere.

Production crews temporarily dressed shopfronts and street details to remove modern elements, allowing the location to double as part of Wonka’s fictional European city.

Why Oxford Was Chosen

Oxford’s architecture offers an instantly recognisable yet timeless look. Its stone buildings, narrow streets, and historic colleges make it ideal for films seeking a European setting without relying heavily on CGI. For Wonka, Merton Street provided a controlled, visually rich environment where snow effects and vintage vehicles could be staged convincingly.

Oxford has a long cinematic history, having appeared in productions such as Harry Potter, The Golden Compass, and Shadowlands.

A Street Steeped in History

Merton Street borders the medieval heart of Oxford and offers views of ancient college walls and gates rarely altered over centuries. Its preservation makes it especially valuable for filmmakers recreating historical periods. During Wonka’s shoot, locals reported night filming and snow effects that briefly turned the street into a winter postcard from another era.

Visiting the Filming Location

Merton Street is publicly accessible and easy to include in an Oxford walking route:

  • 🚆 By train: Oxford Station, then a 20-minute walk.
  • 🚶 On foot: A short walk from Radcliffe Camera and Christ Church.
  • 📸 Early morning or evening visits best capture the atmosphere seen in Wonka.

While the snow and vehicles are long gone, the street’s historic character remains instantly recognisable.
