Wonka – Parade Gardens

In Wonka (2023), Parade Gardens hosts one of the film’s most atmospheric moments. Here, Willy Wonka descends a flight of steps and finds himself facing a dark, column-lined passage, a visual turning point that captures his lowest ebb. Beneath the gardens, in the Colonnades, the scene continues as Wonka loses his last coin and nearly spends the night sleeping on a bench, only for Bleacher to appear and point him toward Mrs. Scrubitt’s boarding house. The sequence blends vulnerability and hope, using architecture and weather to echo Wonka’s inner state.

The Real Location: Parade Gardens & The Colonnades

Located beside the River Avon in the heart of Bath, Parade Gardens is a compact Georgian garden celebrated for its river views and proximity to the city’s historic core. Just below the gardens lie the Colonnades, a covered walkway defined by elegant stone arches. For Wonka, the production transformed this area into a winter wonderland, laying fake snow along the walkway to heighten the sense of cold, hardship, and transition.

Bath proved a key filming hub for the movie, with multiple city locations dressed to evoke a storybook European town. Parade Gardens stood out for its natural verticality and the cinematic reveal created by the stairs descending into shadow.

Why This Location Works

The contrast between the orderly gardens above and the shadowed arches below mirrors Wonka’s journey at this point in the story. The Colonnades’ repeating columns frame Wonka as a solitary figure moving through uncertainty, while the added snow underscores his financial and emotional nadir. It is a location that tells story through space.
