The majestic Roman Bridge of Córdoba, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, was transformed into the legendary Long Bridge of Volantis in Game of Thrones. Beginning in the fifth season, this historic 1st-century bridge became the bustling and vibrant setting of Volantis, one of the largest Free Cities of Essos.
In the third episode of the fifth season, Tyrion Lannister and Varys cross the bridge while on the run together. The bridge is depicted as a lively hub filled with shops, inns, brothels, and street vendors. It is in one of these brothels where Tyrion is captured by Jorah Mormont to be taken to Daenerys Targaryen. Later, in the seventh episode of the sixth season, the bridge reappears as a refuge for Theon and Yara Greyjoy, who escape from the Iron Islands before allying with Daenerys in Meereen.
In the series, the Long Bridge connects the two halves of Volantis and is depicted as an enormous structure enhanced by digital effects (CGI) to extend its length and grandeur. However, the real Roman Bridge of Córdoba, with its 16 arches and position over the Guadalquivir River, is already an impressive sight. It was the only bridge crossing the river until the 20th century and remains a symbol of Córdoba’s rich cultural heritage.
The depiction of the bridge as Volantis reflects a historical practice common in the Middle Ages, where many bridges served as commercial hubs with shops and establishments built directly on them. While this is no longer the case in Córdoba, similar examples can still be found today, such as the Ponte Vecchio in Florence or the Pulteney Bridge in Bath.
The Roman Bridge is not only remarkable for its historical and architectural significance but also for its role in Game of Thrones, which immortalized it as a pivotal location in the show’s epic narrative. Today, visitors from around the world walk across this historic bridge, reliving the scenes of Volantis while enjoying its breathtaking views over the Guadalquivir, blending history and fiction in a truly unique experience.
