Game of Thrones – Meereen in the Bay of Slaves

Filming Location in España

Peñíscola was transformed into Meereen, the largest and northernmost city-state in the Bay of Dragons. Known for its population of three slaves for every free man, this is the city where Daenerys Targaryen arrives with her army to liberate the enslaved and eventually claims it as part of her mission against slavery.

The Artillery Park in Peñíscola served as one of the main filming locations for Meereen. This botanical park, surrounded by the Sierra de Irta Natural Park, provides an idyllic setting with palm trees, olive trees, lavender, and Mediterranean flora. From the park, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Peñíscola Castle.

In episode 4 of season six, Tyrion, Missandei, and Grey Worm are seen walking through the park, discussing the negotiations with the Good Masters of Astapor and the Wise Masters of Yunkai. In another scene, Tyrion and Varys deliberate on the city’s political situation, showcasing both the upper and lower sections of the park, connected by a less vegetated slope.

The Artillery Park was not only a filming location but also served as a resting spot for the technical and artistic crew of Game of Thrones. This unique setting, with its lush vegetation and stunning views, was the perfect choice to capture the essence of Meereen. If you visit Peñíscola, the park entrance fee also includes access to the Peñíscola Castle, another must-see destination.
