The breathtaking Natural Monument of Los Barruecos was chosen by HBO as one of the filming locations for the seventh season of Game of Thrones. Between November and December 2016, the Barrueco de Arriba area hosted the filming of one of the most ambitious and technically complex battles in television history. This site became the setting for “The Battle of the Goldroad,” a critical engagement in Daenerys Targaryen’s war for Westeros.
In this battle, Daenerys’s Dothraki horde ambushed the combined Lannister-Tarly army and supply train as they were returning east to King’s Landing after successfully sacking Highgarden. It was the first time that Daenerys used her dragons in battle in Westeros, riding Drogon and turning the battlefield into a blazing inferno.
The result: 24 minutes of intense action, aired in the summer of 2017, between the fourth and fifth episodes of the season. At the filming location, four information panels have been installed, describing the production of the most iconic scenes in this natural setting.
