Games of Thrones – Dragonstone

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, located on the Basque coast in Bermeo, Vizcaya, is one of the most breathtaking and iconic locations used in Game of Thrones. This small, cone-shaped island surrounded by dramatic cliffs and wild beaches served as the real-world setting for Dragonstone, the ancestral home of House Targaryen. The island’s stunning natural beauty and unique features made it the perfect choice for one of the most memorable locations in the series.

In the seventh season, Gaztelugatxe is where Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) lands upon her return to Westeros, accompanied by Tyrion Lannister, Missandei, Grey Worm, and her Unsullied army. The steep, winding stone staircase of 241 steps, which connects the island to the mainland, became the iconic path leading to Dragonstone. While the chapel at the top was digitally replaced with a grand castle in the series, the surrounding cliffs and views of the Bay of Biscay were unmistakable.

Gaztelugatxe is not just a cinematic marvel but also a place of historical and cultural significance. The first hermitage on the island is believed to have been built in the 9th century. Over the centuries, it has been rebuilt multiple times due to fires and battles. Today, the small chapel at the summit is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. Visitors traditionally ring the chapel bell three times to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits.

The island is a protected biotope and a natural wonder. Its jagged coastline, shaped by the relentless waves of the Bay of Biscay, features tunnels, cliffs, and natural arches. The walk to the top offers not only a sense of accomplishment but also spectacular panoramic views of the Basque coastline. Gaztelugatxe’s popularity skyrocketed after the 2016 filming of Game of Thrones, drawing fans from around the world eager to walk in the footsteps of Daenerys and explore this magical location.

To fully enjoy your visit, it’s recommended to wear comfortable shoes and clothing. While the climb can be challenging, the reward at the top is well worth it. Whether you’re a fan of the series or simply looking to experience the raw beauty of the Basque coast, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a must-visit destination that promises unforgettable views and a touch of cinematic magic.
