The basilica sits atop the Butte Montmartre, the highest point in Paris, offering panoramic views of the city. The actual filming took advantage of the basilica’s surrounding features, including the carousel and phone box at the base of the hill, as well as the iconic flight of steps that climb toward the basilica. Interestingly, the film production cleaned up the location for shooting—contemporary scenes visible today include street hawkers, graffiti, and urban elements that were removed during filming to maintain the film’s idealized vision of Montmartre.

Why This Location Was Chosen

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet selected Sacré-Cœur because of his personal connection to Montmartre, where he resided. The basilica’s architectural grandeur, romantic setting, and the dramatic staircase leading to its entrance provided the perfect backdrop for the film’s central romantic moment. Visitors should note that the Abbesses Métro station, featured in the film, is Paris’s deepest station; however, interior scenes were actually filmed at the Porte des Lilas station due to logistical constraints.
