El guardián invisible – Bar Txokoto

Filming Location in Spain

The Invisible Guardian (El guardián invisible) immerses the reader in the daily life of Elizondo, where the lines between police investigation and town routine are often blurred. In Dolores Redondo’s Baztán Trilogy, social gathering spaces are fundamental to understanding the idiosyncrasies of the valley’s inhabitants. Bar Txokoto is not just a real establishment, but a literary meeting point where the humid, secret-filled atmosphere of the valley translates into conversations over pintxos and coffee, serving as a key setting for the human development of the characters.

Scene in the book

In the narrative, Bar Txokoto (also known as Taberna Txokoto) functions as the social epicenter of Elizondo. It is the place where secondary characters, neighbors, and members of the Salazar family gather to discuss the unsettling events shaking the valley. In the film adaptation, these spaces serve to anchor the story in reality, showing Inspector Amaia Salazar navigating local communication codes that happen at the bar counter, where information flows much differently than it does in a police station.

The real location

Bar Txokoto is an authentic tavern located in the Txokoto neighborhood of Elizondo, Navarre. Its location is privileged, as it sits almost hanging over the Baztán River, just a few meters from the famous dam of the same name. Architecturally, it maintains the rustic and cozy aesthetic of Navarrese taverns, featuring a terrace that offers one of the most spectacular views of the riverbed and the traditional houses with their iconic wooden balconies. It is a place where local gastronomy, from pintxos to full meals, is enjoyed against the constant background sound of rushing water.

Why this location was chosen

The choice of this bar as a location was driven by its authenticity and strategic placement. Being adjacent to the Txokoto dam—the most emblematic point in Elizondo—provides a logical geographic and visual continuity for the story. Dolores Redondo used places she personally frequented to give veracity to the plot; Bar Txokoto provides the social realism necessary for the reader to feel that the story could be unfolding at the next table. Its natural cinematographic aesthetic, especially the terrace over the river, is an unbeatable visual resource for capturing the essence of the valley.
