In the sixth season of Game of Thrones, the stunning landscape of Rambla del Búho, in the Tabernas Desert, was transformed into the barren and treacherous road to Vaes Dothrak. This location appears in episodes one and three of the season, where the Dothraki are seen escorting Daenerys Targaryen as their captive to the khalasar’s sacred city. Later, it reappears as the backdrop for Ser Jorah Mormont and Daario Naharis‘ mission to rescue the “Mother of Dragons.”
The unique terrain of Rambla del Búho, featuring distinctive rock formations such as the famous La Tortuga (The Turtle), provided the perfect setting to depict the vast, unforgiving landscapes of the Dothraki Sea. While the colossal horse statues flanking the mountain paths seen in the series are CGI creations, this natural environment allows visitors to imagine the grandeur of Vaes Dothrak in the world of Game of Thrones.
Filming these scenes required a massive production effort, including hundreds of extras brought in from across the Almería region. This was not the Tabernas Desert’s first encounter with Hollywood, as Steven Spielberg also used it for iconic scenes in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade decades earlier.
Rambla del Búho remains a must-visit destination for film and television enthusiasts, offering a landscape that transports visitors directly into the realm of Westeros with just a touch of imagination.
