Game of Thrones – Meereen in the Bay of Dragons

Filming Location in Spain

The Torre de Mesa Roldán, perched atop an impressive volcanic dome in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, became the free city of Meereen in the ninth episode of the sixth season of Game of Thrones, “The Battle of the Bastards.” This location served as the dramatic setting for the negotiation between Daenerys Targaryen and the slavers amidst the battle for the Bay of Dragons.

In this iconic scene, as Daenerys, Tyrion, Grey Worm, and Missandei face the slavers, Drogon makes a stunning entrance, flying over and majestically landing atop the tower, marking a pivotal turning point in the series. The Torre de Mesa Roldán was a perfect choice for its strategic location, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Almería coastline, and its unique historical architecture.

Set on a flat-topped volcanic dome, the tower has a rich history as part of the region’s defensive structures. While its current appearance dates back to 1766, its origins trace to the 9th century when Abderramán II, the fourth Umayyad Emir of Córdoba, entrusted the Banu Sirag with guarding the coastline against Viking incursions.

From the Torre de Mesa Roldán, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Cabo de Gata, the Mesa Roldán lighthouse, and the nearby town of Carboneras, with the famous Playa de los Muertos just a short distance away. While Meereen’s pyramids aren’t visible, the surrounding landscape offers an unforgettable experience, especially for Game of Thrones fans looking to relive this crucial moment in the series.
