Games of Thrones – The Market of Meereen

The Plaza de Santa María, located at the end of the Felipe II Ramp and accessible through the Portal de Santa María, becomes the abandoned marketplace of Meereen in Game of Thrones. This picturesque square, easily recognized by its arches, appears in several key scenes of the sixth season, including episodes one and eight.

In the first episode, Tyrion Lannister and Varys continue their walk through Meereen after encountering the Red Priest at the Portal Fosc. They arrive at what seems to be an empty marketplace, a reflection of the unrest plaguing the city after Daenerys Targaryen’s disappearance. The desolate streets are a stark reminder of the chaos caused by the power vacuum and the fleeing citizens.

The Plaza de Santa María reappears in episode eight, showing Tyrion and Varys once again in the marketplace. This location is brought to life through its medieval architecture, featuring Roman and Arab archaeological remains, as well as its iconic Renaissance walls. The plaza’s arches and historical charm made it the perfect backdrop for the struggling Meereen depicted in the series.

During the filming, the square was completely closed to the public. Residents were asked to remain indoors, with windows shut, to maintain the authenticity of the scene. According to locals, some even signed contracts agreeing to these terms in exchange for compensation.

The Portal de Santa María, through which Tyrion and Varys pass, was originally opened in 1754 by King Ferdinand VI to ease the access of carts transporting harvests into the city. Today, the plaza and its surrounding areas are must-visit locations for fans of Game of Thrones, offering a glimpse into the world of Meereen while showcasing the rich history and architecture of Peñíscola.
