The Alcazaba of Almería, one of the largest Moorish fortresses in Spain, was transformed into Sunspear, the home of House Martell in Game of Thrones. With nearly a thousand years of history, this stunning monumental complex served as the backdrop for key moments during the sixth season, showcasing its Moorish architecture and magnificent gardens.

In the first episode of the season, Ellaria Sand murders Prince Doran Martell in the gardens of Sunspear, alongside his son Trystane. This scene, filled with intrigue and betrayal, was filmed in the Patio de los Nenúfares, a lush space that perfectly matched the landscapes of Dorne. The production team only needed to add a few plants and decorative elements, such as the Martell sigil, to bring the southernmost kingdom of Westeros to life.

The Alcazaba also appears in the tenth episode, where Ellaria and the Sand Snakes meet with Olenna Tyrell and Varys to form an alliance against Cersei Lannister. This tense encounter was filmed in the fortress’s second enclosure, which features a pond and a small garden next to the House of the Governor.

Built in 955 by Abd al-Rahmán III, the Alcazaba of Almería is a must-visit location for fans of the series. Its imposing structure, visible from anywhere in the city, blends historical significance with an atmosphere that transports visitors straight into the world of Game of Thrones.
