Game of Thrones – Vaes Dothrak

Filming Location in España

The striking landscape of El Chorrillo, located in Sierra Alhamilla near Pechina, became the backdrop for Vaes Dothrak, the city of the Dothraki, in Game of Thrones. Originally built as a set for Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), the collection of huts and streets was repurposed for the sixth season of the series, showcasing its unique potential to depict the vast and desolate Dothraki capital.

In the show, the set appears as the streets and huts where Jorah Mormont and Daario Naharis sneak in search of Daenerys Targaryen, who is held captive by the Dothraki. The location also served as the stage for one of the most pivotal scenes of the season: the burning of the Dothraki temple, where the dosh khaleen (widows of deceased khals) gather. Daenerys emerges unscathed from the flames, a moment that cements her as a powerful figure among the Dothraki and allows her to escape captivity.

Over the years, the lack of upkeep has led to the gradual deterioration of the set, with graffiti now adorning some of the structures. Despite this, the site remains a fascinating location for fans of the series. Walking through the artificial streets evokes the experience of Mormont and Naharis as they search for the “Mother of Dragons.”

El Chorrillo is unique in that it is the only remaining intact filming set from Game of Thrones, making it a must-visit destination for fans eager to immerse themselves in the world of the Dothraki.
