The real location

The exterior of Hawkins Public Library was filmed at the Butts County Probate Court in downtown Jackson, Georgia, United States. This historic courthouse sits prominently on the town square and was repurposed for the show’s 1980s small-town America look. Jackson’s architecture—with brick façades, classic windows, and a stately presence—made it a perfect backdrop to represent the fictional library of Hawkins.

Interior library scenes seen on screen were filmed elsewhere (not at this courthouse), but the courthouse’s exterior—with its balanced proportions and traditional design—became one of the most recognizable elements of downtown Stranger Things Hawkins.

Why this location was chosen

The production designers and location scouts for Stranger Things prioritized real towns that felt historically coherent with a 1980s Midwestern setting. Jackson, Georgia, with its preserved town square and period-appropriate buildings, offered the perfect canvas for transforming everyday American architecture into the fiction of Hawkins. The Butts County Probate Court’s exterior provided an imposing yet familiar civic presence suitable for a public institution like a library.

Logistically, filming in Jackson benefitted from Georgia’s robust incentivized production environment, which includes tax credits and experienced crews familiar with period remodelling. The courthouse’s accessibility and flexibility for exterior shooting meant the production could focus on performance and atmosphere without extensive modification or green screens.

Visiting the location

The former courthouse stands in the heart of downtown Jackson, Georgia, and is publicly accessible for exterior viewing. While it no longer functions as the Hawkins Library of the show, fans can stroll the square, photograph the building, and experience the town that was transformed into one of the show’s key civic spaces.

Because the site is an operational civic building (or historically was), interior tours tied to Stranger Things are not standard. Visitors are advised to respect any local signage, operating hours, and public access guidelines. Early mornings or weekdays make for quieter visits and better lighting for photography.
