Almodóvar Castle, located 22 km from Córdoba, was chosen as one of the filming locations for the seventh season of Game of Thrones, portraying both the majestic Highgarden, home of House Tyrell, and the imposing Casterly Rock of the Lannisters. This historic castle, with its unique architecture and impressive Tower of Homage, served to recreate two distinct realms in the series.
In the third episode of the season, the castle appears as Highgarden during Jaime Lannister’s arrival with his army to besiege the Tyrell fortress. In this sequence, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime) is seen approaching the castle with his troops. In another scene, Olenna Tyrell observes the Lannister advance from the balcony in the Tower of Homage, while the surrounding castle grounds have been digitally modified to match the fictional setting.
Later, after defeating the Tyrells, Jaime walks through the gardens and enters the hall where Olenna Tyrell, portrayed by Diana Rigg, awaits him. In their final meeting, Olenna reveals that she was the one who poisoned Joffrey Baratheon. This hall is notable for its Arab-style windows, which have survived through the centuries, adding a historical touch to the scene.
Almodóvar Castle also serves as Casterly Rock during the Unsullied army’s assault led by Daenerys Targaryen. In this sequence, the soldiers access the fortress through underground tunnels, filmed in the castle’s dungeons, while Tyrion Lannister’s narration (Peter Dinklage) explains the invasion strategy.
